Frequently Asked Questions

AIRStream

6 articles in this topic

How does AIRStream relate to Project STREAM?

AIRStream is built to help banks structure and submit granular data in the format required for regulatory reporting, and it is designed to support a smooth transition to Project STREAM, BNM's initiative to modernise regulatory data collection by eliminating reporting redundancy. Instead of banks submitting the same data across multiple systems (STATSmart, ESS DSS, CCRIS) in different formats, BNM will collect granular data once and generate all required reports from that single dataset, and AIRStream readies the bank for this ahead of BNM's rollout.

Is Project STREAM mandatory for all banks and financial institutions in Malaysia?

Yes. Project STREAM is a BNM regulatory mandate applicable to all Reporting Entities (REs), including commercial banks, Islamic banks, investment banks, DFIs, payment system operators, and other regulated entities. Participation is not optional.

Does the AIRStream platform meet BNM's security and compliance requirements?

Yes. AIRStream is hosted on Finexus's private data centres as a cloud SaaS model, fully compliant with BNM RMiT CTRAG requirements. It is PCI-DSS Level 1 certified, uses AES-256 encryption for data at rest, and each bank is provisioned on a dedicated single-tenant instance with its own segregated database.

Finexus is also certified under ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 9001, PCI 3DS, and SOC 2 Type II, and complies with BNM's RMiT requirements (ISAE 3000). Should the bank identify a security concern, it may be reported directly to Finexus, where it will be escalated and handled by our dedicated security response team.

Does Finexus cover all three phases of Project STREAM, or just Phase 1?

Finexus has built end-to-end mapping and architecture for all three phases. For Phases 2 and 3, only the final BNM output specifications are pending. Once released, Finexus locks in the output layer with minimal changes required from the bank. Banks committing to the full programme are guaranteed minimal re-mapping and disruption across all phases through 2031.

Do we need to replace or significantly modify our existing core banking systems?

Not necessarily. Some front-end channel updates will be needed to capture new data fields (e.g., payment purpose codes, unique customer identifiers). However, a STREAM middleware solution like Finexus AIRStream absorbs most of the mapping and transformation, accepting source data in any format and minimising changes to your existing host systems.

How do we get started with AIRStream?

The bank may submit an enquiry via Contact Us page, and a designated Finexus officer will be assigned to guide the process. This may involve responding to an RFP, RFI, or RFQ with a tailored proposal, or arranging a technical working session with your data, operations, and IT teams to assess the current architecture and propose an integration approach.

Requirements gathering then follows to configure daily granular data submission to BNM in line with AIRStream's reporting requirements. BNM's Phase 1 final specifications are expected by Q3 2026, with go-live targeted for Q4 2026, so early engagement is strongly recommended.
